What do I need to start enjoying Sky + digital TV?

To get you up and running as quickly as possible, we'll give you a quick run down of what you need to start watching your favourite shows right away.

Select a Sky+ TV package

First of all, you need to decide on your Sky+ TV package. Unlike Freeview or Freesat, Sky is a subscription-based service. This means that you will receive a monthly bill for using the service. The amount of On Demand content you will have access to will depend on the type of the digital TV package you decide to go for. Every digital TV package comes with a brand new Sky+HD set top box from Sky, which is yours to keep. It also comes with one year warranty, should something go wrong. Save with a Sky broadband and digital TV bundle

You don't have to be a Sky Broadband customer to enjoy their digital TV service, but bundling these services could save you money. Getting your services from a single provider is a great way of cutting costs and keeping track of your bills, as you can simply get one statement instead of two or three.

Connect your Sky+ set top box to your broadband router

All you need to do now is to connect your Sky+HD box to your broadband router. The two main ways of achieving this are...

Directly by Ethernet cable

The simplest method is just to connect an Ethernet cable to both the Sky+HD box and your broadband router. The upside to this is there is little to no setup involved, however you will either need to own a long Ethernet cable or place your router near your Sky+ box in order for the connection to work

Over WiFi via the On Demand Connector

You can use your WiFi to access all the feature of Sky+ with the On Demand Connector, available from sky for £21.95. The setup for this device will depend on the Sky+ box you own, however Sky has a full guide for every option on their website.

The Sky 3D channel

Sky 3D is the UK's first dedicated 3D TV channel. From seeing every drop of sweat during an epic Premiere League final, to feeling like you could reach out and touch a penguin during a David Attenborough adventure, your Sky+ HD box with 3D offers some amazing experiences.

What is the Sky 3D channel all about?

Three dimensional TV content is either broadcast through a special 3D channel like Sky 3D or decoded by a 3D-compatible TV from a 3D Blu Ray disc. You would be surprised at the variety of 3D content now available on Sky 3D - you can watch 3D premiere league matches on Sky Sports, enjoy amazing documentaries that were specially filmed to look breathtaking in 3D, or watch family movies in full 3D and keep the kids entertained for hours

Should I get Sky 3D and what will I need?

3D is great for families If you have a busy household with sports fans, movie buffs and documentary fans then Sky 3D could be a good way to make family time even more special.

Buying the 3D TV set
If you're considering an upgrade to 3D, you'll need a 3D ready TV set. These are now considerably less pricey than when they first landed in the UK back in Spring, 2010. You need to choose between a 3D TV that requires polarised glasses (passive 3D), or active 3D which requires active shutter glasses. You can enjoy watching Sky 3D on either.

You'll need a 3D TV deal from Sky Currently the only 3D digital TV channel available in the UK is Sky 3D. You can access it if you sign up to Sky Entertainment Extra +.

What 3D shows are there on Sky 3D?

  • Natural History Museum Alive
  • Storm City
  • The Bachelor King 3D With David Attenborough
  • Unravelling the Cosmos 3D
  • Ryder Cup
  • World Darts Championship
  • Monsters University
  • The Amazing Spider-Man
  • Man Of Steel

To watch movies or sports in 3D, you have to subscribe to Sky Sports and Sky Cinema for a little extra per month. Want to know what's on Sky this month? Check out our up-to-date Sky digital TV listings.
