Match your broadband deal to your household’s needs and save on your bills

The survey of 2,000 online users found that few people downloaded enough from the internet to use up their data usage allowance. As a result the survey suggests that users should on average spend no more than £9.60 a month on broadband, or £20 when line rental is included.

However the survey found the average bill is £26.12 a month - so households are wasting £73 a year.

Charlie Ponsonby, CEO of Ofcom accredited broadband comparison service Simplifydigital.com comments:

"The survey highlights one reason why families may be spending too much on their broadband, but more often than not families are overpaying simply because they are not bundling their services from a single provider."

Simplifydigital.com's broadband experts take thousands of calls every week from customers looking to save, of which 84% can save money, with the top 20% saving over £440 per year, by bundling their TV, broadband and home phone services from a single provider.

Simplifydigital.com's 5 steps to saving on your broadband bills:

1. Dig out your bills and check what you are spending today: You will need to consider four bills:  your broadband bill; your home phone calls bill;  your line rental bill and your TV bill (if you pay for TV)

2. Use an Ofcom accredited broadband checker, to understand what broadband deals are available at your postcode.  Deals available vary depending on where you live (as the broadband providers need to put equipment in your local telephone exchange in order to provide the cheapest deals)

3. Speak to an independent expert for free to help you match your household's needs to the best package.  Simplifydigital.com's experts will ask you some simple questions (in plain English and no jargon guaranteed!) to make sure that the package you buy suits your needs

4. Consider bundling your TV, broadband and home phone services together from a single provider for the biggest savings.  BT, Sky and Virgin Media all offer a so called "triple play" package starting from as little as £17 per month (excluding line rental)

5. Use a "Switching Support" service like Simplifydigital's to take the worry and hassle out of switching to a cheaper provider.  Their London-based experts are on hand 7 days a week, to help you choose the best package, place your order for you, and be on hand to help right up until the day of install of your new services.
