Sky vs Virgin Media student broadband deals

Broadband

While the student packages from both these suppliers are a great option for anyone looking to set up their broadband service for the next 9 months, there is a big difference in the speeds available from each one.

Sky is offering a standard 17Mb connection, more than enough to get everyone in the house online. Whether you need to research a microbe for your latest biology project or you're just throwing on a movie to watch in your downtime, the included unlimited usage means you'll never run in any trouble by going over your cap. Plus, with Sky's advertised 99.9% core network reliability, you can be sure of a great connection no matter when you log on.

By comparison, Virgin Media is offering ultrafast download speeds of up to 152Mb per second. So no matter how many of your housemates are downloading the latest Game of Thrones episode, the huge amount of available bandwidth means you'll be able to stream your favourite movie in high quality every time. Plus, with absolutely no cap, you don't have to worry about adding any more to your bill just because your latest art project required a huge download.

Phone

Neither package requires you to pay for phone calls, which makes sense when most of your housemates will probably have their own mobile service to use. However each network deals with it slightly differently.

While Sky still requires you to pay for line rental, you don't pay any extra for a phone service. Instead, you simply pay for the calls you use at the end of the month. This means you'll still have a landline that you can receive calls on should you be low on signal in your new home.

On the other hand, Virgin media's broadband service has no need for line rental at all. The cable broadband service used by the network doesn't require any kind of phone line to be hooked up to your house, however a specific cable box will need to be installed in order for it to work properly. Before signing up, you may want to make sure your landlord is fine with this to go ahead.

The Deals

Sky offers the best value of the bunch, with a completely free unlimited broadband connection now available on a 9 month contract with just line rental to pay! After your contract ends, the service is only £10/month plus line rental.

There's no need to pay any line rental for Virgin Media's student deal. The network's ultrafast service is now available on a simple 9 month contract, so you never need to pay for more months than you'll use.
