Surge in mobile broadband enabled products forecast

By Charlie on January 6, 2010 9:44 AM
The way mobile broadband enabled devices are manufactured and sold is expected to witness massive changes as the products become more popular, according to industry analysts.

Modern digital cameras, camcorders, media players and e-book readers are all set to become mobile broadband ready, with sales of internet-enabled technology expected to increase 55-fold to 58 million a year, according to ABI Research.

Senior analyst at ABI Research Jeff Orr said: "While demand for products in the other categories is just starting to ramp up, consumers are already snapping up connected PNDs and e-book readers in numbers, and will continue to do so.

"This will by necessity change the way that device manufacturers operate and force them to reassess business models."

Mobile broadband products tend to be linked to one operator, with the customer paying a monthly contract to receive the service in the same way phones and dongles work. However, the mobile broadband technology can also be made available on a pay-as-you-go basis, like with e-book readers, where the customer pays for content they use.
