Super fast broadband city selected

Broadband which runs at "super-fast" speed is being installed in 16,000 homes and businesses in and around Cardiff and Taffs Well.

BT has begun a programme to upgrade its fibre-optic network to cater for 10 million households by summer 2012, which is around 40% of the entire country, promising speeds five times faster than the current standard rate.

The upgraded network in Cardiff and Taffs Well will apparently produce download speeds of 40 megabits per second, with a further promise of 60Mbps due soon. First-generation broadband can only get as fast as 8Mbps.

Virgin Media provides 50Mbps broadband connections in some parts of Cardiff and Taffs Well.

BT said residents of the two areas of Wales can plug into the new network within weeks. Ann Beynon, BT director for Wales, said: "Once again, Wales is at the forefront of the broadband revolution in the UK."
