Project Canvas continues to divide opinion. The project is aimed at allowing Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and broadband enabled on-demand video services to be viewed through digital TV sets. In plain English, this means that Freeview digital TV viewers would be able to access on-demand TV such as BBC iPlayer without paying a digital TV subscription to Virgin Media or Sky.
This would be possible via a Canvas digital set top box connected to a fast broadband connection.
Project Canvas, which is a venture between digital TV broadcasters and broadband Internet Service Providers (ISP), would also bolt on Freeview TV channels and recording (PVR) capabilities.
But the Digital Television Group (DTG) which represents digital TV manufacturers and digital TV providers like Sky and Virgin Media, has now expressed its concern about Project Canvas the BBC Trust.
In essence it feels that Project Canvas may not be in the interests of all its members - particularly as digital TV manufacturers are already developing their own plans to roll-out broadband enabled digital TVs, which are likely to go on sale later in 2010. Virgin Media and Sky have also been highly critical of the Project canvas proposals.
