Freesat, the subscription-free digital satellite TV service has extended its beta trial of the BBC iPlayer and is officially releasing the code needed to access the service.
Freesat say that viewers wanting to take part need a Humax Freesat HD or Freesat+ set top box and a broadband connection of at least 1Mbps. A broadband connection of 1 Mbps however is unlikely to deliver an acceptable user experience, particularly if other members of the family are intending to use the broadband connection to surf the internet at the same time.
The move is the first time the service has been made available on a non-subscription set top box, although the iPlayer has been available to Virgin Media digital TV subscribers via Virgin's V+ PVR.
Users must tune into any BBC channel and press the Red Button to access the BBC iPlayer Humax.
The code 5483 should be entered when the BBC Red Button homepage loads and the iPlayer appears on screen after a "Number not found" message
Freesat boss Emma Scott said initial feedback to the on-demand TV service has been positive.
"For many users, it was the first time they had accessed BBC iPlayer on the television, and there were high levels of satisfaction with the service itself as well how easy it was to set up and operate," she said.
