TalkTalk announced today that it was launching
a new product - free television, as you might have suspected the
service is completely free but, well, there is a
"but".
TalkTalk's Plus customers (who have access to
speeds of at least 3Mbps) can all opt for
TalkTalk's digital TV service. However, customers will be required
to sign a new contract if they want the new service, existing - 24
months, newbies - 18 months.
What is this innovative digital TV product, you ask? TalkTalk's
Plus customers will receive a free YouView box (worth
£299) which will give them access to all the content it
comes with (for example Freeview channels and VoD content) as well
as TalkTalk player (the broadband provider's version of
iPlayer).
This is where the "but" part comes in. Customers who
are interested in "flexible premium content", such as
Sky's Sports or Movies, will need to buy a flexible subscription
(30 days minimum). Plus, the set up will require an engineer to
come over and put everything into place. For £50.
Head of TalkTalk, Dido Harding, said in the
supporting statement:
"TalkTalk Plus customers will, from today, be able to
pre-register for their free YouView set top box with no additional
monthly subscription. This compelling offer is the UK's best value
triple play package.
"It will give our customers more reasons to stay with us for
longer and attract new broadband customers. It will also deliver
significant value for shareholders. This is TalkTalk at its
disruptive best."
For longer is definitely right, SimplifyDigital thinks. All 24
months longer, if you are an existing customer. Nevertheless, those
who are interested are welcome to pre-register on the ISP's
website, no live date has been revealed as
yet.
