It seems that Sky Broadband has received a
court order to block an illegal downloads facilitating website,
also known as Newzbin2, which BT has already been
banning since July.
As a quick reminder, last summer the High Court of Justice
forced BT to block the website, after the Motion
Picture Association (MPA) won an injunction against the telecoms
giant.
A short time after that, an array of ISPs including
Virgin Media, Sky and
TalkTalk have admitted receiving letters from the
MPA asking them to mimic BT's steps.
Sky Broadband issued a statement saying:
"We have received a court order requiring us to block access
to this illegal website (Newzbin2), which we did on 13th December,
2011.
"Moving forward, as and when clear and legally robust
evidence of copyright theft is presented, we will take appropriate
action in respect to site blocking, which will include complying
with court orders."
Other major broadband providers should also expect similar mail
in their letterboxes.
It has also been said that a lot of BT users already found ways
to access the website despite the block.
An array of ISPs and industry insiders has been against this
move as according to them it had limited effect and was too
costly.
Instead, they suggested looking at reasons why people were
downloading illegally in the first place.
