Hacktivist group Anonymous has recently said it
would "destroy" Facebook as it accused the social
networking platform of selling data to certain
agencies working for the government.
According to the reports, the set date when Facebook is to
"go down" is the 5th of November, with the hackers calling
on everyone to "join the cause and kill Facebook" in order
to keep personal data private.
In more detail, Anonymous said that Facebook was making a spare
buck by selling data to government agencies as well as security
firms which then could use the information and "spy on
people".
It doesn't stop there - according to Anonymous' findings the
data could also be passed to authoritarian foreign
governments.
The hacktivists stated:
"Some of these so-called white hat info sec firms are
working for authoritarian governments such as those of Egypt and
Syria."
In addition, those who might be rushing to change their privacy
settings could be in for a surprise as Facebook might have more
information about you than family members:
"Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless
of your privacy settings, and deleting information is
impossible.
"Changing the privacy settings to make your account more
private is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your
family."
The social media giant is yet to comment on the
story.
