Are you waiting for YouView to rollout? It seems you'll have to wait a bit longer still, six months to be exact.

YouView (previously known as Project Canvas) is a broadband-based, video-on-demand (VOD), subscription-free IPTV service which was to underpin new products from TalkTalk and BT Retail this year.

The launch has been delayed until the first months of 2012 as it kept "crashing".

This proved that the rumour circulating in January 2011 was true - YouView suffered some technical difficulties as well as internal issues between the members of the Joint YouView Venture (BBC , ITV , BT , TalkTalk , Channel 4 , five, Arqiva).

The Telegraph quoted a senior TV executive as saying:

"It just doesn't work when you turn it on and keeps crashing."

"You would think that after at least 18 months of development and at least six million pounds worth of investment from each shareholder, the box would actually work when being shown to its owners."

YouView claimed that it was putting the final touches on its base technical specifications in time for the start up.

It has been said that the launch needed "significant technological innovation as well as industry engagement" to establish a platform which had "common standards" as a core.

Richard Halton, CEO of YouView, said:

"Our focus has always been to deliver a product to consumers that is right, but not rushed.

"Creating a truly open TV platform that will bring consumers increased choice has required significant technological innovation. Our timings for the launch reflect the scale and complexity of this project."
