Supermarket giant Tesco is
to start offering their own calling cards for people who want to
call overseas.
Tesco first launched the cards in their smaller stores around
the country and their success has prompted the supermarket chain to
broaden the presence across the UK.
Industry experts have valued the calling card market at around
£250 million so it's no surprise that Tesco want to muscle in and
get their share.
Tesco released a statement today saying...
"Customers can benefit from low cost international calls
including calls to over 60 countries for just 2p a minute.
"The card can be used from any mobile phone, landline or
payphone.
"A 30 minute daily call to India using the Tesco
International Calling Card costs less than 64p a day, saving users
more than £2,500 per year compared to BT's standard rates and even
more compared to Virgin Media's standard package."
Update 17th January 2011:
An unhappy reader has been in touch asking us to point out that
the card has a 90-day expiry after purchase. This is how
Tesco explains expiration in their FAQs:
"The card expires 90 days after purchase. Where the card has
been recharged, then the expiry data also resets from 90 days of
that recharge. There is no limit to the number of times you can
recharge the card and every time it is recharged, the expiry will
reset to 90 days. Once the card has expired any amounts left on the
card is forfeited."
We hope that clears things up for everyone.
