There is a suggestion in today's City AM that Virgin Media, the UK's second largest pay digital TV provider (after Sky), is planning to give away free FAPL matches as part of a digital TV, broadband and home phone "triple play" package.
According to Steve Dinneen of City AM, Virgin Media follows BT Vision who also could be planning an FAPL giveaway for digital TV customers who bundle the service with broadband and home phone services.
Virgin Media and BT can currently buy Sky's basic sports package for a wholesale price of £13.40 per month. But an Ofcom review, expected to publish its findings in two weeks, may reduce this price to as little as £8 per month. This would give Virgin Media and BT more scope to discount Sky Sports, when bundled with other products.
But the Ofcom decision is by no means a foregone conclusion and is one that Sky is likely to vigourously oppose, so don't expect any change in pricing soon. A Sky spokesman said: "We will wait for Ofcom to publish its report and take things from there."
