There has been much talk about the imminent launch of 3D TV sets from the major digital TV suppliers this summer. The launch of these sets coincides nicely with the launch of Sky's new 3D TV channel called Sky 3D.
With this in mind, Sky is keen to emphasize that Sky 3D, its forthcoming 3D TV service and Europe's first 3D TV channel, will be compatible with all 3D TVs being introduced by Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and LG. As such Sky 3D will work with both 'active' and 'passive' 3D formats.
When connected to a Sky+HD box the new 3D TVs will enable people to watch both high definition TV (HDTV) and 3D TV services.
Sky 3D launches in April in hundreds of in pubs and clubs across the UK and Ireland and then to Sky+HD homes later this year. All Sky+HD boxes are 3D Ready, but would-be 3D TV customers need to buy a new 3D TV.
Brian Lenz, Director of Product Design and TV Product Development at Sky, comments: "Working alongside TV manufacturers, we're looking forward to helping the UK take a global lead in bringing 3D into the home. Whether active or passive, Sky 3D will be compatible with all 3D TVs sold by the leading TV manufacturers, so consumers will be able to enjoy 3D free from any confusion over formats or compatibility."
