The latest analysis from Point Topic, the broadband research group, shows that IPTV is growing rapidly as super-fast broadband connections proliferate worldwide.
IPTV is currently in less than 10% of total broadband homes but is currently growing far more quickly than overall broadband connections. At the end of 2009 there were over 33 million IPTV subscribers worldwide, an increase of 47% in the year and 11% in the last quarter alone.
France leads the IPTV countries with 8 million subscribers, followed by the USA with nearly 6 million and China with approximately 4 million. The latest figures mean that over 42% of French broadband subscribers now have IPTV.
IPTV penetration in the UK is very low as the majority of digital TV is delivered via Sky (digital satellite) and Virgin Media (fibre-optic cable). But things are set to change very rapidly in the UK market, with the launch of IPTV services from a range of companies including SeeSaw, FetchTV, Blinkbox, 3View. As well as the launch of Project Canvas which will provide IPTV via broadband enabled Freeview boxes.
Super-fast broadband into the home is the real enabler of the growth of IPTV, as the broadband and digital TV worlds continue to converge.
