The serene surrounds of Basingstoke are set to be given a shake up as news surfaces today that the city is been earmarked as the UK capital of super fast fibre optic broadband.
Openreach, part of BT's network, are connecting up to 27,000 homes and businesses to a new fibre optic service that is reported to reach speeds of up to 40Mbps with a guaranteed average of at least 15Mbps.
Fibre optic broadband allows users to download larger amounts of data at a quicker rate than broadband that comes through our telephone lines (DSL). As such, users will be able to download high quality films at a faster rate as well as music tracks in a matter of seconds.
Peter Cowen, BT's South East regional partnership director, said: "This is a fantastic milestone for Basingstoke and the beginning of an exciting journey for the town.
"Basingstoke is really trailblazing for the South East region and leading the way in this communications revolution."
