Broadband
AOL offers three broadband packages.
The download speed is the same in all three (8Mb), but the monthly
usage limits and contract terms differ.
The standard wireless broadband package comes with a 10GB
download limit, which is fine if all you want to do is check your
e-mail and browse the web. You also get a free wireless router, so
you can connect to the web anywhere in your house without the need
for messy wires.
If you don't want to commit to an ISP,
AOL has a package for you. With Wireless Flexi, you can
cancel at any time without incurring a penalty. This package is the
same as the standard wireless package in every respect, except
there is a one-off set-up fee.This may be a good option if you're
planning to move house within the next year.
Calling plans
In addition to its broadband service, AOL offers five AOL
Talk packages. Talk Unlimited and Talk Evening and Weekend packages
are great for people who mostly make local calls. Both are
currently free for broadband customers.
AOL's international call packages are
designed for people who make a lot of overseas calls. They range in
price from £5.89 to £9.99 a month and give you free calls to 36
popular international destinations.
Parental controls
AOL is renowned for security and
privacy. All of its broadband packages come with parental controls
as standard. If you have small children using your PC, you can use the parental control features
to filter out websites that may be inappropriate for them. You can
use the software to set different levels of security for each
member of the family, giving you maximum control over your
children's use of the internet.
If you are a heavy broadband user
AOL currently offers only one
broadband speed. 8Mb is adequate for most people, but not for heavy
users. The 10GB download limits on two of the plans are not enough
for anyone who wants to download music or films.
If you want free online security
AOL's Security Suite, powered by McAfee, is
great for protecting your PC from viruses, spam and hackers.
However, it's not included in the broadband packages. If you want
this useful feature, you will have to pay a monthly subscription
fee of around £3. Other providers offer this for free.
