How to get broadband without a landline

When you make most of your calls on a mobile, or via Skype over Wi-Fi, it's not essential to pay for line rental at home. Luckily, there are now several broadband packages available that don't require a landline to work, like Virgin Media broadband, or mobile broadband.

What kind of broadband service can I get without line rental?

Fibre optic broadband

Mobile broadband

Satellite broadband

Fibre optic broadband

Virgin Media offers fibre optic broadband with no landline. The glass and plastic cables transmit signals which are faster than traditional broadband and allow you to do more online thanks to better speeds.

Even the basic Virgin Media broadband package gives you speeds up to 50Mb, and you can opt for a superfast deal with speeds up to 120MB, if you're going to be sharing your internet service with lots of people and doing data-intensive things like streaming or downloading movies.

Virgin Media broadband and digital TV bundles give you better value and more services to enjoy, like catch up TV and the ability to record entire series that will be stored on your TiVo box, at the touch of a button.

Mobile broadband deals

Mobile broadband doesn't require home phone line rental. You sign up to a data plan with your chosen mobile network, and they supply you with an agreed amount of internet data every month, via 3G or 4G connectivity. Mobile broadband signals are sent from satellite towers directly to your smartphone, tablet or to a mobile broadband dongle with a SIM card inside, depending on the type of mobile broadband service you sign up for.

Benefits of mobile broadband:

  • You get broadband speeds without a home phone line
  • Some mobile phone contracts already include unlimited data and the ability to 'tether' your smartphone or tablet's internet connection, creating a Wi-Fi hotspot that your other internet-enabled devices can see and access
  • Mobile broadband is available anywhere there's network signal, not just when you're at home near your router

Things you need to be aware of:

  • Mobile broadband speeds aren't as fast as home broadband speeds - 3G speeds are fine for web browsing, streaming YouTube videos and reading emails. 4G speeds are fast enough for you to stream or download multiple media files at once, but still can't compare with a superfast home broadband service
  • The faster mobile broadband variant, 4G, is still being rolled out across the UK and coverage is currently limited and pricey

Go for mobile broadband if fibre optic broadband isn't available, or if you want the flexibility of an internet service you can take with you almost anywhere.

Satellite broadband

If you live in a rural area and want home broadband speeds, satellite broadband is your best available option. It's faster than mobile broadband and more akin to traditional ADSL broadband in terms of how it runs, but you don't need to have a landline to use it.

If you can't get Virgin Media cable and you aren't keen on mobile broadband, we would advise you to consider a standard home broadband connection that comes bundled with line rental, before opting for a satellite broadband connection. It's cheaper to bundle your broadband with a landline and digital TV service than to take up a satellite broadband only deal.
