The major provider of cable TV in the UK is Virgin Media (which was formed after NTL and Telewest merged).

Virgin Media delivers cable TV, broadband and home phone into your home via a fibre optic cable. However the cable TV service is only available in certain areas (they currently cover about 50 per cent of UK homes).

Before you decide if cable TV is best for you, we recommend that you compare all the digital TV offers that are out there.

Here's our top 10 watch outs when buying digital TV:

  1. The great digital TV deals that are advertised may not be available in your area due to a lack of availability. Let us know your postcode and we'll check for you.
  2. You can get some great deals by buying digital TV, broadband and home phone services from the same provider.
  3. Are there any specific channels you must have? Let us know what you want and we'll check the packages for you.
  4. Don't be seduced by the headline cheapest digital bundle deals that don't deliver your requirements and lock you into a long term contract.
  5. Consider a package that gives you a PVR (personal video recorder). This allows you to pause, record and rewind live TV!
  6. Watch out for big price hikes after the end of the introductory deal period.
  7. Don't assume that you have high definition TV, just because you have an HD Ready TV set.
  8. Advertised pricing may not apply for existing customers.
  9. Do you need Sports or Movies? Just add them to your requirements above.
  10. Look out for premium rate charges for making technical help calls.
