A guide to business broadband

It's not a good idea to run your business using a domestic broadband package. Obviously, you don't need child protection programmes at the office, but most likely you will need software which home internet deals will not be able to supply you with.

So, dear CEOs, employees, employers and general office staff, the time has come to take advantage of business broadband packages.

Broadband-less office?

It's traumatising enough to think what the world would be like without your iPhones or BlackBerries. However I dare you to imagine what your working day would turn into without a broadband connection.

Even during the faintest internet blackouts, your work all of the sudden stops and all email contact with customers or business partners is lost. If you use a domestic broadband deal - the only thing you will be able to do is go to the canteen or a nearby cafe and overdose on caffeine whilst waiting for the services to come back.

However with a business broadband package the level of support is significantly higher - your broadband is the provider's top priority, if you like.

The business deal will enable you to call a support line and get an engineer knocking on your office's door as soon as possible - some contracts may also come with a guarantee that your internet is going to be reconnected within a set period of time.

Also, many business packages come with a back up dial-up connection, just to make 100 per cent sure that your internet ruins as smoothly as your business. Although dial-up is not as fast as broadband internet, but it is a worthy alternative to no connection at all.

Hackers no more?

While getting you home PC or laptop infected with a nasty virus, malware or spyware can cost you time and money - the consequences can be horrid if this happens on your business computer.

Imagine all of your company's sensitive data along with customer information and employee bank accounts getting into the hands of the wrong-doers.

Having cold sweats yet? Security is very important for firms and that is why business broadband deals come with more advanced security options.

Also when your business is expanding along with the amount of connections - the business broadband provider will be able to make a record of that and tell you when an upgrade is suitable for your business, thus keeping it all crash-free.

Loading faster?

When you are at home there is only that much that you can download, afterwards the speeds get slower, websites stop loading and so on. Annoying at home - a disaster at work.

That is why business broadband providers have much more generous allowances with many suppliers giving access to unlimited downloads.

In addition, upload speeds tend to be much faster on business broadband packages rather than domestic ones - to get the maximum upload speeds, aim for the biggest deal from the provider (often the most expensive one).

Back it all up.

You will be able to connect to your office network remotely, using a so-called Virtual Private Network (VPN), this is very similar to the earlier-mentioned cloud computing.

This is very beneficial if you or your colleagues are constantly on the move, from conference to conference - you will be able to access your files through any machine available wherever you hold your next meeting, as well as your home computer.

Another great feature that business deals give access to is backing files - most suppliers do remote backups for you - on remote sites during quiet times.

It's a great way to ensure that your presentation isn't somehow lost in cyber space five minutes before a meeting!

Voice your views

As business broadband speeds are quite high - they will allow you to have a less disruptive VoiP (Voice-over-IP) experience.

In other words, speak with your business associates through the internet, a lot like Skype, but on a business level and with less cut offs or annoying voice break ups.

Also, you will be able to connect with your colleagues in the office quicker and more effectively, this includes sharing big and small files, folders and drives where the whole office can store files collectively.

Extra, read all about it!

A lot of business packages will come with bonuses, some valuable, some not so much. One of these extras will be routers with integrated firewalls - these will ensure your broadband service runs smoothly and you get the most of the deal.

However your company can always use the routers it already invested in.

Your enterprise might also be getting a slice of internet web-space, however this will be sufficient only for a small website.

Similar services thrown in can be email packages, spam protection software as well as domain name registration.

In other words, if you work in a company called SimplifyDigital, chances are you'll be looking into having www.simplifydigital.com as your domain name - some packages will offer this for free, whereas normally this is a paid service.
