What is digital TV?
Digital TV is just a different way of sending TV pictures and sounds to your home. Analogue sends TV signals through the airwaves only, but digital TV compresses the signal and sends it in a number of ways – satellite, cable, phone line, etc – with no interference. Digital TV is also a catch-all word for both the equipment you need to receive the digital signal and the content you receive, in terms of digital TV packages.

Do I need digital TV?
The UK has just begun the digital switchover timetable, switching off the traditional analogue systems in favour of digital TV. Therefore if you want to continue to watch TV, you will need to make sure your TV can receive a digital signal. There are many options for this, from buying a Freeview box, through to getting a satellite or cable TV service. Many new flat-screen TVs even have Freeview built-in!
By telling us your postcode, we can work out when your area will be affected by the digital TV switchover. Digital TV was first switched on in Whitehaven, Cumbria in 2007, and the digital switchover timetable ends in Ulster, Tyne and Tees in 2012.
Digital TV is more reliable and digital TV delivers a clearer picture, especially if it's high-definition digital TV (HD). In addition, digital TV offers far greater choice than analogue TVs five channels. There are literally hundreds of digital TV channels covering every subject you can think of from movies to motorsport and documentaries to drama.
