The great majority of broadband providers in the UK rely on the BT copper phone wire network to deliver the broadband service to your home. This is made possible by some clever technology inserted in the BT telephone exchanges and is referred to as ADSL broadband. However as copper wire is often over 50 years old and was designed to cover voice signals and not data, there are some constraints with this type of broadband:
• The broadband connection speed of service declines the further away you live from the BT telephone exchange (meaning you are likely never to receive the advertised speed)
• The speed also declines if lots of people are using their broadband connection at the same time (so called contention).
