Virgin Media has announced that it is upgrading the broadband service that it provides for customers on its ‘L' broadband package from 4Mb to 10Mb, thus providing them with more than double the broadband speed of their current broadband package. The broadband upgrade begins in late February and will roll out region by region, completing in the late summer.

The most common ADSL services in the UK have a maximum broadband speed of just 8Mb meaning that Virgin's upgrade gives their broadband customers a clear advantage.

Neil Berkett (Acting CEO), Virgin Media said

"Virgin Media's cable network gives us a natural superiority over other broadband services and we're delighted to reward our customers with this free upgrade. We've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with our cable network, and we will continue to look for new ways to satisfy the growing demand for even faster broadband in the UK. We're proud to be leading the country's superfast broadband revolution."

Virgin Media also has plans to extend its upgrade programme to a superfast 50Mb, following successful trials in Kent. The 50 Mb service will be made available to over 9 million homes in the UK by the end of the year.
